Standardized reporting of cancer recurrence and progression data in registries

Interesting to see the recent publication of a new European expert consensus on the collection of cancer recurrence and progression data by population-based cancer registries

From our work with Nordic registries, we have repeatedly encountered a key challenge: while these data are exceptionally strong for population-based research, critical oncology outcomes – particularly recurrence and progression - lack the granularity needed for robust and comparable analyses

This new consensus is therefore a very welcome step.

By providing standardized definitions, variables, and a tiered approach for data collection, it helps establish a common data landscape for oncology outcomes research. Such harmonization should improve reproducibility and comparability of findings across Europe and, hopefully, facilitate broader international collaboration in the future.

Congratulations to the authors and contributing parties on this important initiative.

We are looking forward to seeing how these recommendations will support registry studies for oncology outcomes in the future.
